homemade laundry soap

May 18, 2009

Lots of people ask me about this recipe, so I thought I would share it here and bless everyone else with it!

This laundry soap will cost you $25 – $28 for about a year’s worth of soap. I have four children and do lots of laundry and it will last me longer than a year. Your usage will vary, so it will last longer or shorter.

2 boxes Borax (I use 20 Mule Team Borax)
2 boxes Washing Soda
16 bars Fels-Naptha soap

Grate the Fels-Naptha, probably the finer the grate, the better. Add it to the other stuff and stir all together. Use 1 TB. per batch…yes, only 1 TB!!!! It works great!

If you are local, the best place to get the ingredients is WINCO.

Enjoy the laundry…the never ending opportunity to develop patience, endurance, and chemical know-how.

  1. If you’re really low on funds, go to the Friendly Freezer website (just type “Friendly Freezer into your browser) and she has a laundry soap that only requires a bar of any kind of soap and washing soda. I have used it and love it even more than the Fels Naptha stuff b/c the Fels Naptha was a little rough on Rion’s skin. This way I could use cheap Ivory bar soap and have no rashes! And.. did I mention it’s less expensive? :D

It left rashes even when using 1 TB? We haven’t had any issues like that and Blythe is VERY sensitive. I like the Fels-Naptha for the stain removing…it is so good at the tough ones out!

I love learning all sorts of ways to make stuff at home. Does anyone have a great Dishwasher Detergent recipe? Or Shampoo and Conditioner that really work?

Here’s the all natural shampoo I was telling you about. I’m still too nervous to try… but it’s all very convincing:

  4. Tracy, his skin was EXTREMELY sensitive. That’s what led me to looking for alternatives in the first place! ;)

Wow! I am excited to try this! Do you use stain remover too, or does it work that well? And where at Winco do you find the soap and washing soda? In the laundry detergents?

I squirt stain remover on bad stains and for a stinky batch of towels I will put in 2 TB, but other than that this is all I use. At Winco, the borax and the washing soda are on the north end of the laundry detergent aisle, right when you walk into that aisle, turn right and they will be right in front of you. The Fels Naptha is about 1/3 of the way down the aisle on one of the higher shelves – about eye level…well, my eye level anyway…maybe your chest level!

The solar ovens will be here tomorrow!!!!!!!

Ha ha, let’s try this again.
    Tracy,
We have a front-loading machine that needs high-efficiency detergent (HE detergent) Do you know if this would work for that or not?

From everything I have heard, it works just fine. This “detergent” is very, very, very low sudsing, so it won’t cause problems that way. I have googled it and others say it works, so I think it does. Let me know if you find out different!
